The definition of Karma suggests that the good deeds you do manifests back in your life as positive developments. ‘Intentional action’ is one of the main components in the definition of karma and refers to the Universal Law Of Cause And Effect. It is also important to understand that your thoughts and words, along with your physical actions, play an important role in your karma.
What is Karma?
“What goes around comes around” is the main principle of Karma. Karma is followed in many religions like Hinduism and Buddhism but rather than having a religious reference, it is more a way of life.
In Buddhist teachings, Karma is described like so: 'for every event that occurs, there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first, and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according to whether its cause was beneficial or harmful, to others and oneself'.
In Hinduism, there is a saying ‘jaisi karni waisi bharni’ which translates ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’. In other words, the fruits of your labour, positive or negative, are yours alone.
The laws of karma therefore hold the doer responsible for their actions – positive or negative. Therefore, everything that happens to you – good or bad - has resulted from your own doing.
How to Create Good Karma
It is important to learn how to create good karma in your life. Every individual should practise these few tenets that I have come to live by, not only in an effort to learn how to get good karma but also to contribute positively to the Universe in which we live. These are:
• Create a loving atmosphere in your home. It is the foundation of all other relationships.
• Be kind in your dealings with people and animals. The Earth belongs to us all.
• Be gentle with the Earth. It is the reason we have survived as a species for this long.
• Respect yourself as well as others and take responsibility for your actions.
• Do good deeds frequently throughout the day; help a stranger across the road or give up your seat for someone on the subway.
• Mediate often. Calm your mind and your spirit.
• Adopt a rescue animal from a shelter. Nothing compares to the unconditional love you receive from a pet.
• We have just a short while on this Earth. Try and spend it in harmony.
• Make kindness your religion.
• Don’t let your ego stand in the way of mending a relationship.
• Accept your mistakes and apologize if necessary.
• Accept change with open arms but never compromise on values.
• Spend a little time each day alone. You’ll be amazed how much you can teach yourself.
• Let go of the past and don’t dwell on it. You’ll find arguments easier to resolve.
• Travel and see new places. There’s nothing like it.
• Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. If your words may hurt another, hold them.
• Don’t judge people easily. And if you must, don’t judge them by the money or assets they possess.
• Be compassionate. Good things will come to you when you are.

Why should having good karma matter, you ask? Well, karma is absolutely critical to your development as a loving, caring, thoughtful human being. It will ensure you take more responsibility for your actions, thoughts and words, and will serve as an incentive to having a more positive approach to the world. You see, when you start to plant the seeds of good behaviour, you will reap only the best results.
